10 Lessons from Longshot Derby Winning Duo

On Saturday I got to see live what grace under fire looks like in the form of Calvin Borel and his fleet footed mount Mine That Bird in the 135th running of the Kentucky Derby. I was humbled to witness this inspirational duo launch themselves from last to their decisive 6 and a half length first place finish. This story book ending will stay with me for a long time.

This plucky little brown horse and his enthusiastic rider demonstrated everything anyone ever needs to know about creating success in 10 easy steps:

  1. Show up. Even if it’s in a non-glamorous get up and takes some doing to fit in with the others present.
  2. Stay focused to your tasks – go about your business even if you’re not the popular, sought after frontrunner.
  3. Shun statistics that don’t support your personal goals.
  4. Believe in your own assessment of your chances.
  5. Partner with competent optimists.
  6. Do everything in your power to prove them right.
  7. Follow through with all your might leadership designed to maximize your potential.
  8. Don’t look back.
  9. Celebrate with carefree abandon upon completion of a goal.
  10. Thank everyone who helped get you where you are and mean it sincerely.

Around this time of year in the bluegrass region surrounding Lexington and Louisville in Kentucky -horses go nuts with all the equine sports. First we have the spring meet at gorgeous old time thoroughbred race track, Keeneland, then on to the Rolex Kentucky 3 Day Event and end up with the Running of the Roses every first Saturday in May. iota McHippus, celebrates this crazy race with one of his own in our front yard. Giddy-up!
